Service
US sales tax compliance
Economic nexus reviews, state sales tax registrations, returns and marketplace rules for sellers into the US.
Overview
The US has no VAT, but 45 states and DC charge sales tax, and thousands of local jurisdictions add their own rates. After the Wayfair decision, an online seller can owe sales tax in a state without any office there. An accountant in our network maps where you have nexus, registers you and keeps returns on schedule.
What’s included
- Economic and physical nexus review by state
- Registration for sales tax permits
- Product taxability and exemption certificates
- Filing calendar and returns
- Marketplace facilitator reconciliation (Amazon, Etsy, Shopify)
The exact scope is set in the written proposal from the accountant who takes your engagement. Services are provided by independent professionals in our network, not by Ask Muhasib.
Who it’s for
- E-commerce sellers shipping to US customers
- SaaS and digital product businesses
- Businesses storing stock in US warehouses

United StatesInternal Revenue Service (IRS)
- VAT / sales tax
- No VAT. Sales tax is charged by 45 states and DC, plus local jurisdictions. Since South Dakota v. Wayfair (2018), remote sellers can owe sales tax in a state once their sales there pass its economic nexus threshold.
- Record keeping
- The IRS generally recommends keeping records for at least 3 years after filing, longer in some cases (for example 6 years if income was substantially under-reported, and 4 years for employment tax records).
Common mistakes to avoid
Penalty amounts depend on the country and the facts, so we do not quote figures here. Your accountant can tell you what applies.
